♦ Contestants must be able to furnish their own horse or have a written lease agreement for the use of a horse suitable for the activities that they will be asked to participate in for the entire reign. Horse shall be “stock type”, Stallions are NOT allowed. The horse must be clean and well taken care of at all times. The horse will also be in good health; a lame horse at competition will result in low horsemanship score.

♦ To become Miss EPR, the contestants will be judged in five separate categories; horsemanship, interview, public speaking, appearance, and fundraising sales. She should also be aware that she is being judged at all times.

Horsemanship: Contestants will be judged on the control of the horse at all times. Applicants will be allowed to bring only one horse to use for the entire contest. The judges are evaluating the applicant and their ability to ride and control their horse in a variety of situations including a wave and flag run, and demonstrating the ability to work cattle. Committee may request you ride another contestant’s horse.

Interview, Public Speaking, and Appearance: Contestants will be required to give a 3-5 minute speech on a topic chosen by the interview committee.

o Speech Topic: Name a rodeo competitor or figure (past or present) that inspires you and why. Give examples or why you aspire to be like this person.

The speech and personality division will be judged on poise, ability to project oneself, voice expressiveness, and appearance. Appearance includes overall attractiveness, grooming, posture, attitude and current trends and styles. Rodeo knowledge will require you to know the Eugene Pro Rodeo as well as general PRCA history and events. Contestants should also be well-versed on animal welfare and current world-wide and local events. Applicants will be asked impromptu questions about any or all of the above topics.

Fundraising Sales: Contestants will be required to fundraise to support the queen fund. (Fund includes new chaps, crown, belt buckle, sash, etc.) Each contestant will be required to raise at least $500 from sponsors and/or EPR calendar sales. The contestant that raises the most funds for the queen fund by January 14, 2012, will win the fundraising sales portion of the competition.
♦ As part of the try-out process, all applicants will be required to ride in the Springfield Christmas Parade on the 3rd of December. We ask that the contestants wear an outfit that pertains to the color-scheme of red, white, blue or black. The parade will continue rain or shine. Each contestant will be provided with a contestant serape and flower pack. Each is property of the EPR Queen committee and will be returned following the parade. Contestants will meet for staging in the True Value parking lot near 21st St. and Olympic St. in Springfield, OR. Contestant’s trailers will be moved to the end of the parade near Pioneer Parkway.
♦ The highest scoring contestant overall between the categories will retain the title of the 2012 Eugene Pro Rodeo Princess and will be named the 2013 Miss Eugene Pro Rodeo during the Eugene Pro Rodeo in July 2012. The chosen contestant will attend all events with the current queen and prepare to take on the position at the time of the rodeo.
♦ The highest scoring contestant will become an official representative of the Eugene Pro Rodeo at the time of the coronation dinner which will be held in The Feed Room at Oregon Horse Center within a month after the date of the tryouts (Time and date TBA). We request that each contestant collect items to bring for the silent auction to be held at the dinner that will directly support the queen fund for the 2012 Miss EPR.

Appearance shall reflect as “being on the job” at all times setting an example beyond reproach.

♦ Contestants are required to travel to all speaking engagements, rodeos, parades, and other events as designated by the Eugene Pro Rodeo (EPR) committee, including all EPR committee meetings. Activities begin January 1st, 2011 and will continue all year through December. MEPR will be required to attend ALL four nights of the Eugene Pro Rodeo. MEPR is required to be at the arena by 4:00pm all four nights of the rodeo and will take part in the Grand Entry each night and is expected to run sponsor flags, run back cattle and sign autographs. MEPR will attend most other events outlined on the Tentative Queen Schedule as long as dates don’t conflict. During “rodeo-season” MEPR should expect to attend and event almost every weekend.

♦ Contestants shall wear appropriate western attire for tryouts and all MEPR Royalty activities. This consists of wearing clean jeans, a western style shirt or jacket, western hat, belt and western boots, for horsemanship. Skirts and dresses are allowed for speaking and personal appearances. For parades, MEPR should be prepared to wear red, white, blue, and/or black. The contestant’s horse shall be clean and in good health. Equipment shall be clean and in good repair. The queen or contestant will be as ready as possible when arriving at an event where anyone can see her. (ex. She should get ready and have hat and crown on before readying the horse at a parade or rodeo)
♦ The queen will update the Queen Blog (www.MissEPR.blogspot.com) and or Facebook page a MINIMUM of 4 per month. This is important because the Eugene Pro Rodeo is very media-based and people from all over the community look at the page for information about the rodeo and future queen activities. That being said, we request that the queen try to take at least one picture at each event for posting and/or a year-in-revue “scrapbook”.
♦ The winning contestant should be prepared to travel with the current queen, coordinator, and/or chaperone to any and all events.

♦ Drinking of alcoholic beverages or use of drugs or tobacco of any kind will NOT be permitted while you are representing the Eugene Pro Rodeo. The EPR Queen will be expected to uphold the image of highest manners and behavior. The use of inappropriate behavior and or language will not be tolerated while representing the Eugene Pro Rodeo. This includes any and all information text or photos on or in any internet chat rooms, including but not limited to, “Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

♦ Contestants and the future title-holder will not be seen using a cell phone in public. Calls are permitted for queen-purposes only (ex. coordinating trailer rides) and will be done so only when the queen is away from the public. Failure to do so may result in disqualification from the competition.

♦ Family, friends or any such person accompanying the title-holder or contestants will also be expected to uphold high character and behavior because they also reflect on the image of the queen and the rodeo. Further, should the queen have a “significant other”, there will be no touching, kissing or other showings of affection while the queen is in queen-attire and representing the rodeo in any way. Contestants and the title-holder will also be expected to treat these people with respect at all times, even while preparing at their trailer.

♦ MEPR should be someone who works hard, has experience with horses and is willing to help out at all times. She is someone who is representing the rodeo as a well polished “cowgirl”. She is also a role-model to children and willing to work in all sorts of media situations including, but not limited to, TV and radio commercials, and sponsor requests.
